Our Daily Bread

In our daily reading - chronological we recently read the story of the Israelites and their Exodus from Egypt and now sojourning in the Sinai Desert and the fantastic story of God providing food for them, bread from heaven. It can be hard to imagine what life might have been like as we read the narrative and try to put ourselves in the story. Psalm 78 summarizes the journey of the early people of God and in it some of the emotion. There is a provocative question in Psalm 78 - can God spread a table in the wilderness?

The manna in the wilderness was a shadow of the reality found in Christ. As Israel depended on daily bread from heaven, we must depend on Jesus daily. He is the true Bread that gives life—not just for a moment, but for eternity.
